Differences between the environmental impact

The environmental impact of avocado can vary depending on the country of origin and the distance it travels before reaching the consumer. Below are some examples of the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted in the production and transport of avocados in three different countries:

In Chile, the production and transport of 1 kilogram of avocado generate around 13 kg of CO2. This is mainly due to the longer transport distance, as the Chilean avocado can travel up to 12,000 km before being consumed in other countries. (Source: WWF document)

On the other hand, in Mexico, it is estimated that the production and transport of 1 kilogram of avocado generate approximately 0.6 kg of CO2. In addition, if we consider that avocado travels a distance of 10,000 km before reaching the market, it is necessary to take into account the additional emissions associated with long-distance transport. As for Spain, where the European avocado is grown, it is estimated that the production of 1 kilogram of avocado generates approximately 0.29 kg of CO2.
